Derek Ryan has already had one of his best summer’s ever, barnstorming Ireland at a rate not even Usain Bolt could match. Appearing at the country’s leading festivals as well as undertaking his annual acoustic summer session intimate gigs, his sell out shows have been electric, energising many villages and small towns nationwide. Although only half way through the summer of 2019, his journey continues into mainland Europe for three shows in France and Denmark in the coming weeks.
Considering his hectic schedule, he has made time to return to the recording studio to record his new single ‘On The Sesh’. Co-written with long time collaborator Eoin Glackin. On The Sesh brings to the fore Derek’s lifetime love for traditional music in a blend of his lively upbeat country, married with a sound that has ignited many a Fleadh or Comhaltas gathering for generations.
On the Sesh is a colloquialism for a lively session when a group of musicians gather for a rip-roaring evening of endless music and the odd beer or two. He is accompanied on the track by multi award winning all-Ireland trad band The Tumbling Paddies. The youthful Fermanagh five-piece who are carving out a name for themselves have been credited for bringing a new young audience to the traditional scene akin to that which Derek has brought to the Irish Country music market for the past 8 years.
Derek in the past has teamed-up with other traditional musicians. In 2017 he blended his original song, written in Nashville with Trent Wilmon; Heaven Tonight with the music of Goitse and probably one of his best known songs: Hold On To Your Hat with the internationally acclaimed Sharon Shannon.
Having grown up on a diet of traditional music, Derek himself was a multi award-winning Ceili drummer. ‘On the Sesh’ tells the story of travelling all over the world having a great life but returning to Ireland and the contentment of having a good time with friends and family and above all a good olde session of music; something Derek fondly remembers from playing with the local Bagenalstown Comhaltas group every Saturday night.
