I’m delighted to be joining my friends Marc Roberts and Lynette Faye on the new TG4 and BBC NI series of Opry an Iúir. It starts next Wednesday night on TG4 at 10.30pm, with the show devoted to the life and times of one of Ireland’s most exciting young country stars, the one and only Derek Ryan. This year’s series will also feature Susan McCann, Mary Duff, Jimmy Buckley, Robert Mizzell and Billy Yates. Marc gives each star a helping hand as they prepare to perform a one off duet in Irish with a special guest. Backstage, Lynette Fay chats with ‘superfans’ and celebrity fans of each artist. The shows were recorded in front of a live audience, mixing archive, testimonials from fans and chat. And viewers will get rare glimpses into the home lives of our stars.

Next Wednesday night you’ll see Marc giving Derek Ryan a helping hand as he prepares to perform a one off duet in Irish with his special guest Caitríons Ní Cheannabháin. Backstage, Lynette chats with a superfan and other loyal fans of Derek. And, of course, Derek will perform a good selection of his country favourites on the show. Along with great performances, viewers will get a peek inside Derek’s home life. He will compose a new song in his studio and prepare for a photo shoot with a Cadillac. As you know, I’ve been learning Irish, so doing the show was a great opportunity for me to use it. It was challenge for me, but one that I thoroughly enjoyed. I also got the chance to sing a duet each night with the featured artist, so it was a lovely experience all round. So, hopefully, you’ll tune in to Opry an Iúir this Wednesday at 10.30pm.
